Restorative Yoga is a sequence of yoga poses designed to deeply relax muscles and connective tissues. Soothing music and gentle postures, along with the smooth flow of breath, enhance mental quietness thereby encouraging a deep dive into the rest and restore attributes of the body’s own parasympathetic system.
The practice utilizes full support for the body encouraging no physical effort to maintain the pose. The body is gently positioned to stretch minimally while supported with yoga blocks, yoga bolsters, yoga straps, pillows, blankets, and/or walls to allow deep release.
A lot of our daily habits and routines bring about disturbances to our nervous system, creating decreased stress coping skills, pain, illness, disturbances in sleeping patterns and emotional imbalances. The practice of restorative yoga dissipates the “fight, flight, freeze, fix” stress response and helps us engage our parasympathetic system to soothe the nervous system, correct poor sleeping patterns, help alleviate anxiety-related symptoms and stimulate the body’s natural healing response.
