Join AnnMarie Wolf for this 5-week introduction to Yin and Roll Yoga.

The classes in this 5-week series combine a Yin Yoga class with ball roll therapy.  Each week the release of the myofascial in a unique area of the body will be explored.

Yin and Roll Yoga is the combination of myofascial release and Yin yoga.  The slow methodic stretches of Yin Yoga release the fascia. Touch with the controlled pressure of the roll of a ball is a powerful medium and one that can help develop awareness of the body through feedback and enhance the myofascial release (MFR) possible in the Yin poses.

Our Body is composed of many Myofascial Lines that travel the length of every part of the body and criss cross the width of the torso. Fascia is connective tissue that is present throughout the body between and around the muscles (myo). It forms a three-dimensional web of “threads”, that connect the muscles to each other, to the bones, to the joint capsules and to the skin and allow them to slide in relation to each other.

Injuries, muscle tensions and/or habits in movement patterns cause restrictions in the web. These are places where the webbing tightens and restricts the body’s movements. Since everything is connected through fascial lines restrictions at one location in the fascial web can also cause sticky points at a great distance from the original location.

Myofascial release and yin yoga are powerful techniques individually and are amplified when used together. They both affect the muscular and fascial systems, easing out the sticky spots in the tissues to bring the body back to uninhibited flow of prana and movement. Myofascial release ball roll techniques search for the restrictions in the web and release them in a gentle way. This is done by means of sustained mild yin yoga stretches under the light pressure, of a therapy ball during which the yogi rolls the tissues with feeling to influence the tissues in depth.
